I listen to Francis Chan’s sermons on CD here in Kenya. He said something the other day that stuck with me.
“Those who say “there is no god” are often right. Because the kind of god they want is one who is their personal servant and centers everything around them. That god doesn’t exist. Only God exists, and He centers everything around Himself, His purposes, and His glory.”

Matatus are public transportation vehicles here in Kenya. They seat about 14 people (legally) and swarm about the roads like drunken mosquitoes. Although these vans are usually very beat up, there is one aspect that never is lacking–the paint job or lettering on the outside. Every matatu will have a word or phrase or drawn picture or even a printed decal on the back window, side windows, front bumper, back bumper, side doors, and even windshield. Yes, these little vehicles are quite a sight to behold.
Today, as I drove students to the airport for their Easter break, the most memorable matatu I saw was black and simply said “blackalicious” in cursive letters.
Being a logophile, I had to share that with you. Try to use blackalicious today in a conversation. I will too.

I consider this quote from Thomas Watson.
Death begins a wicked man’s hell.
Death ends a godly man’s hell.
There are many things I love about teaching (some days it’s like heaven), but there are a few things that I hate, things that resemble the other place. Like grading research papers…
Thanks be to God, during this Easter week, that I’m saved from any real hell!

Terry Pratchett said–
Build a man a fire, and he’ll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm for the rest of his life.
One of my students gave me this quote today. If you take it spiriually, it’s a great analogy for Pentecost. The Spirit is fire living inside of us and far surpasses any religious system or ritual where man needs a human intercessor between him and God.
If you take it literally, it’s just plain funny.

On my blog, I posted a slideshow/video that was put together by some Rift Valley Academy students. If you are able to put yourself in their shoes, it will break your heart.

I recently asked for prayer for all of our vacancies as a staff. Since we’re all ”faith-based” missionaries at Rift Valley Academy, we receive no salary; all of our money to get here and live here comes from supporters. If you prayed for those staffing needs, thanks. Today, at our staff prayer meeting, we got the report on all of the staff who are already committed to come. And it ain’t pretty. Most of them are currently trying to raise support, and most of them are hundreds and hundred of dollars short of the monthly support they need to work at RVA. I can’t tell you how much this frustrates me. People are ready to serve the lost and reach out to the world for God’s glory, but no one will stand behind them, sacrifice on behalf of them.
I know, I know. I need to focus on my God and not the mountain in my God’s way. I need to keep positive. So instead of despair, I’ll pray and focus on quotes like this:
“I had rather stand against the cannons of the wicked than against the prayers of the righteous.” Thomas Lye
