“We cannot keep the birds from flying over our heads–but we can prevent them from building their nests in our hair!“
This definition of temptation–from Martin Luther–is most memorable to me.
It is better to be faithful than famous.
Theodore Roosevelt
One of Rift Valley Academy’s “claims to fame” is that Teddy Roosevelt visited here on a hunting safari soon after his presidency.

My great concern is not whether God is on our side, My great concern is to be on God’s side.

Shortly before his death, William Carey said to a friend: “You have been saying much about Dr. Carey and his work. When I am gone, say nothing about Dr. Carey; speak about Dr. Carey’s Saviour.”
Motivation is when your dreams put on work clothes. –Ben Franklin
Today’s “quote of the day” comes from my sister…who became a mother on Mother’s Day this year…just five days ago! When my then-fiancee, now-wife Heather came to visit my family in 2000, we got to talking about our origins. Heather explained that she was a miracle baby, in the sense that her mom had a IUD (a popular birth control device in the 70’s) when she was conceived. My mom was astonished. I too was born around an IUD! While we all marveled at the coincidence, my pithy sister gushed this utterance:
“God bless the IUD babies.”
We all decided that would look great macramed on a gift pillow at Hallmark, although none of us has patented the idea yet. To see a picture of my new nephew, click below.
And he that strives to touch the stars,
Oft stumbles at a straw.

If we’re going to pursue a walk with God, we’re going to need friends and a bit of grace. Otherwise, we’ll fall down before we get anywhere.
“I wish I could take every Christian and dangle them over the pit of hell for 30 seconds.” C.T. Studd
I think the opposite is just as true. Let someone step into heaven for 30 seconds and see if that changes the way they view life.
Since C.T. Studd didn’t have this ability and neither do you, you have to pray and read Scripture and imagine what it’s like. You have to put all your faith in the reality of the Bible according to Jesus and the prophets, so much so that heaven and hell are more real to you than the grass under your feet and the breath in your lungs. That will make you a Christian who loves his neighbor and love the Lord as he should.
As I begin work on my next book, tentatively sub-titled “The Revolutionary Way YOU Can End Third World Poverty”, I meditate on the words of Henry David Thoreau–Simplify, Simplify, Simplify!
